Being Real is Mesmerizing
by Rev. Debbi Brown
(this article appeared in "Arizona Networking News" -  June/July 2000)

BEING real is charming and disarming. Have you ever been to a lecture and wanted to ask a question but feared you'd look stupid, so you refrained? And then someone raised his or her hand and asked that very question. It's almost as though the whole audience heaved a silent sigh of relief because everyone was thinking the same thing. You end up admiring that person and feeling grateful to him or her for having the courage to speak up.

Being real has everything to do with being honest and truthful in the moment. Becoming real is an outcome of our own evolution as we grow on our spiritual journey. As we awaken to our true inner nature, we begin to live from a sense of spirit and not ego. We learn that life is not about looking good but being true to ourselves and our own internal experiences. Honesty develops within us.

Trying to look good or be perfect isolates us in the ivory tower of appearances where nothing is real. If we're lucky, we learn that trying to live up to society's or another's idea of perfection is meaningless and empty. We must follow and dance to our inner drummers to find true happiness.

We all have that inner homing device called the soul that will guide us to ultimate happiness and fulfillment. We must choose to listen to it. Sometimes it takes true courage to heed these inner nudgings and longings. We cannot be afraid to risk looking foolish amongst others. As Arthur Schopenhauer says, "We forfeit  three fourths of ourselves to be like other people." Integrity means wholeness. Staying true to ourselves is the highest integrity and leads us to wholeness.

Being genuine is a gift. It creates sacred space. It gives others the opportunity to be authentic and paves the way for true communication in an atmosphere of love and acceptance. Once we release judgment, we simply are what we are and can give voice to that.

In a speakers group called "Be Heard Now!" (based on Lee Glickstein's book, Be Heard Now!) we learn how to be present in the moment with others. When we maintain true eye contact with each person in an audience while we are speaking, an amazing thing happens. We are pulled into the present moment. In Neuro Linguistic Programming, we learn that we look up or down to the left or right to access different memories. When we are making eye contact, we cannot go to another place. We need to break that eye contact to go to the past or future.

Within the space of the present moment we speak from our hearts, and what comes out is sincere. It's a beautiful experience. And it takes courage.

Anytime we do anything that reveals ourselves on an intimate level to others, it takes courage. Courage is doing what we are afraid to do anyway. Being real is mesmerizing. It happens when we love ourselves enough that we want to remain true to our inner experience, dialog and truth.
